Originally released by Columbia Records on July 27, 1999, The Writing’s on the Wall, Destiny’s Child’s second studio album, surpassed the already formidable expectations set by their debut a year earlier, affirmed Beyoncé’s mediagenic star power and ensured DC’s enduring status as one of the most successful female vocal groups in music history. Executive produced by Mathew Knowles, The Writing’s on the Wall showcased tracks produced by Missy Elliott, Kevin “She’kspere” Briggs, Rodney Jerkins, Eric Nealante Phillips and Beyoncé among others and included guest appearances from rapper Missy Elliott and R&B trio Next. The Writing’s on the Wall generated four Top 40 singles including the US #1 chart-toppers “Bills, Bills, Bills” and “Say My Name” as well as “Jumpin’ Jumpin'” (#3) and “Bug a Boo” (#33), and is certified 5X Platinum in Canada.

“Bills, Bills, Bills,” the first single from The Writing’s on the Wall was accompanied by an electrifying music video, directed by Darren Grant, lensed in an iconic beauty salon (in tribute to Beyoncé’s mother, Tina Knowles). “Bills, Bills, Bills” reached #1 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks in the US for nine consecutive weeks, making it one of the longest running #1 singles in the history of the chart. It reached #7 on the Canadian Singles Chart.

The video for “Bug A Boo,” the album’s second single, was the first Destiny’s Child clip to chart on TRL’s Top 10 countdown. The record spent 20 weeks on the Hot 100 (peaking at #33) in the US.

The album’s third single, “Say My Name,” became one of Destiny’s Child’s signature songs, an undeniable universal sentiment that helped the track win two Grammy Awards in 2001 (for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals and Best R&B Song). The song’s video took home the 2000 MTV Video Music Award for Best R&B Song. Billboard ranked “Say My Name” at #7 on its 100 Greatest Girl Group Songs of All Time list. The track was Destiny’s Child’s first collaboration with producer-songwriter Rodney Jerkins.

“Jumpin, Jumpin,” the fourth single from The Writing’s on the Wall, peaked at #1 on the Hot 100 Airplay chart in the US for seven consecutive weeks, becoming one of the biggest radio hits of 2000. Co-written and co-produced by Beyoncé and Chad Elliott, “Jumpin Jumpin” spent 16 weeks in the Top 10 (longer than previous #1 hits, “Bills, Bills, Bills” and “Say My Name”). It peaked at #8 on the Canadian Singles Chart.
